Atomic mass games star wars11/11/2023 ![]() I enjoyed my experience with Star Wars: Shatterpoint. You might be in a good position to win the first struggle but completely out of place on the second, making the third one a truly nail-biting experience that can come down to a single die roll. Attack now and use what resources you can as early as possible because things can change based on the turn of a card or a bad dice roll. Double moves are usually a strong choice for a piece but it also can be useful to get a piece into position at the beginning of the turn to follow up at the end once everyone’s taken their shots.īecause of those choices, this game felt more aggressive than most miniatures games I’ve played. The wild card name made it an important decision on when to use where and when. I also liked the card initiative with the shatterpoint card mixed it. I hope that further expansions allow pieces to hurl terrain at each other through the Force like Shatterpoint’s sister game Marvel: Crisis Protocol. Once we got into the flow everyone was pushing and pulling pieces and scampering up terrain to claim checkpoints. The movement and verticality of the game struck me. It comes down to two choices based on the trees but sometimes that can mean the different between dropping a ton of damage and triggering useful abilities for your character, such as healing or pushing an opponent away from an objective point. The Combat Trees offer not just a way to differentiate between named pieces and support troops but also give players tactical decisions to make after a hit. ![]() The goon squad units seem more likely to be removed as they have multiple figures but share a health pool. Units take damage until they are Wounded, take wounds until they are Inured and take Injuries until they are defeated. It seems like pieces rarely ever get completely taken off the table. We printed out some cheat cards put together on the web but I encourage game makers to include aids like that in the box to speed play. It was a rought start during the first struggle and having a few symbols that looked very similar to my middle aged eyes didn’t help. Keeping all the terminology straight can be a challenge learning a new game. For just learning the game, I would recommend one struggle and then playing the next game will all the struggles included once everyone is familiar with the terminology. Each struggle took about an hour or so with setup and break down taking another hour. ![]() For example: Does Asajj Ventress do a ton of damage to Anakin Skywalker or does she inflict several conditions to make him less effecting in the next turn? My Star Wars: Shatterpoint ExperienceĮach game is comprised of the best of three rounds of struggles which end when one side pulls the meter over to their winning space by holding objectives or injuring opponents. These results are part of linked pathways that allow for the attacker to make strategic choices after an attack resolves. Rather than a straight subtraction, the hits that get through trigger results on the character cards. The longer a battle runs on the more these abilities cost so this mechanic is a subtle push not to get too defensive in play.Īttacks are resolved in a pretty classic way to start with attack rolls achieving hits and defense rolls absorbing them. This is where most of the acrobatic Jedi stuff lives like dashing across the battlefield or jump up to the top of a bit of terrain.
